Prostate Artery Embolization

Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is the latest in enlarged prostate (BPH) treatments and is a minimally invasive procedure that can provide relief to patients that suffer from the side effects of an enlarged prostate. While this treatment option is currently performed by a limited number of physicians, it has gradually become more readily available. Valley Radiology is proud to offer this procedure in the Fayetteville, NC area.

How Does Prostate Artery Embolization Work?

Starting with an ultrasound or MRI, an interventional radiologist will map the supply of blood to the prostate gland. From there, image guidance will be used to guide a catheter into the prostate artery through a small incision in the wrist or groin area. Through the catheter, small spherical particles called Embosphere® Microspheres will be injected. These microscopic spheres block the supply of blood to the prostate, starving the cells of oxygen and allowing the gland to shrink.

A Minimally Invasive Alternative

This procedure typically takes under an hour and a half and is performed on an outpatient basis. Prostate artery embolization is less invasive than alternative therapies for enlarged prostates and has its fair share of benefits, including:

  • A success rate of 85%.
  • Lack of sexual side effects associated with other BPH treatments. By contrast, one-third of patients reported an improvement in sexual function.
  • Less recovery time and side effects when compared to traditional surgical treatments.
  • Relief from symptoms associated with various prostate problems, including lower urinary tract symptoms, BPH, hematuria, and prostate cancer.
  • Involves only local anesthesia.
